NW Masters RedX Pharma looking beyond cancer

REDX Pharma, winner of the 2012 North West Newcomer Award in the North West Business Masters awards in association with Jaguar, is already looking beyond just cancer and is hoping to develop treatments for a number of other diseases.

The Liverpool-based start-up, which is currently recruiting for more than 100 roles, after winning nearly £6m from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund last year to create an oncology centre.

masters jagFinance director Norman Molyneux said the ambitious company had received more than 1,000 applications from across the country, and is already looking at other areas of bio-medical research.

Among these new fields is to find ways of countering the growing problem of resistance in antibiotics and has programmes in several other therapeutic areas, such as influenza and cholesterol-lowering statins.

RedX chemists change the pharmacophore – the molecular ‘engine’ at the heart of any compound, as opposed to focusing on the structures outside the core, where traditional drug research takes place.

RedX Pharma chief executive Dr Neil Murray, describes the business as a “a discovery engine” for big pharmaceutical companies.

Judge Laura Wolfe, managing director of Journey9, said: “They are in a difficult sector that is not doing so well but they are bucking the trend and they are looking to create up to 250 jobs in the near future.”

RedX saw off competition from tea brand Charbrew and Lancashire sweet company Goody Good Stuff to take the award.
