Cammell Laird completes milestone

WIRRAL shipyard Cammell Laird has delivered the first phase of a £44m aircraft carrier contract for the Royal Navy.
It has built the flight decks for the Queen Elizabeth-class vessel, and the 3,500 tonne components are now being shipped up to Scotland for assembly.
Cammell Laird chief executive John Syvret said: “This is a terrific contract for the company to work on and I pay tribute to our staff and suppliers who are working enormously hard with the Aircraft Carrier Alliance to deliver these magnificent flight decks.
“It showcases our world class engineering facilities including our construction hall which is one of the biggest and best equipped in Europe.”
A large ocean-going barge is carrying the flight deck modules from Birkenhead to Rosyth on the east coast of Scotlland.
Cammell Laird is due to complete the construction of further modules which will be shipped to Rosyth later in the year.
