Council pledges support to BAE Crewe employees facing axe

CHESHIRE East Council has offered its support to staff at BAE Systems’ Radway Green plant in Crewe facing redundancy.

The defence giant announced yesterday that up to 75 jobs could go at its munitions factory in the town as part of a wider programme of over 600 job cuts, which included the closure of a 165 year-old tank factory in the North East.

The new leader of Cheshire East Council, Cllr Michael Jones, described the job losses at the 450-strong Radway Green site as “very sad news indeed”.

“I would like to make it clear that I am personally committed to doing all I can to ease this stressful time for our Cheshire East residents and their families.

“This will include rallying the Council’s Redundancy Support Team and the local JobCentre Plus to give advice and help to those residents who are potentially at risk of losing their jobs.

“Cheshire East Council recognises that Radway Green is a significant employment hub for the borough.

“We are in close contact with the company and the unions to understand the issues surrounding the announcement and we will be working extra hard to mitigate the impact on our residents’ livelihoods by supporting the company and the unions where we can.”
