M&S bank roll-out creates 100 Chester jobs

RETAILER Marks & Spencer’s announcement that it is to create 50 new in-store bank branches will lead to 100 jobs being created in Chester.

The retailer is planning to make current accounts available in-store at a select number of branches from autumn, and is creating 100 jobs in Chester where its M&S Money operation is currently based in order to service these. Around 400 jobs will also be created within stores.

The new M&S Bank business is an extension of its M&S Money joint venture with HSBC. The retailer said that in-store branches would be open twice as long as traditional high street venues and allow customers to bank while they shop. It also plans to introduce mortgages at a later date.

Colin Kersley, chief executive of the new M&S Bank, said: “We know loyal M&S customers will be genuinely excited by the prospect of banking with their favourite retailer.

“With over 25 years financial services experience, M&S Bank is the natural next step for M&S Money and will provide customers with a credible, alternative choice in the banking sector.”
