Green Energy: more vision required

THE Government needs to develop a coherent strategy if the UK’s nascent Green Technology sector is to achieve its potential, according to a panel of experts.

Speaking at a Green Energy debate held by TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with law firm DLA Piper, industry figures were critical of the government’s decision to change the terms of feed-in tarrifs, which provided incentives for investors to pour money into solar, wind and other green energy schemes.

David Hunt, sales & marketing director of Liverpool-based renewable energy specialist Eco Environments, said: “There is just no clarity, even for moderate-sized investments so for a major investment it makes it exceptionally difficult.”

Serco Nuclear’s commercial manager, Alex Fielden, agreed, suggesting that the green tech sector was not being prioritised highly enough.

“The government can’t take a long-term view on tomorrow’s problem,” he said. “That presents difficulties with persuading long-term investment – the long-term strategy is non-existent.”
