WILMSLOW and London-based stockbroker XCAP Securities has appointed Sir Peter Middleton as its non-executive chairman and Jonathan Freeman as an independent non-executive director.
Sir Peter spent nearly 30 years at HM Treasury, working closely with nine Chancellors, and was permanent secretary from 1983 to 1991. He chaired a review of Civil Justice for the Blair government.
Today, he is UK chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies, chairman of Marsh Ltd, chairman of Mercer Ltd, and chairman of the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution.
He was previously chairman of Camelot Group from 2004 to 2010, a director, chairman and deputy chairman of United Utilities from 1994 to 2007, a board member of OJSC Mobile Telesystems from 2005 to 2007 and a board member of Bass Plc from 1992 to 2001 and General Accident (later CGU) from 1992 to 1995.
Sir Peter became group chairman of Barclays Bank in April 1999 and retired in August 2004. He joined Barclays in 1991 as group deputy chairman and executive chairman of BZW and was group chief executive from November 1998 until October 1999. He was also president of the British Bankers Association from 2004 to 2006 and a member of the National Institute for Economic Research from 1996 to 2007.
Sir Peter Middleton said: “I have a passion for working with smaller companies in their early stages of growth – a situation which is both challenging and rewarding. We have a robust executive management team with the desire and drive to move the business to its next level of development and I look forward to reporting our progress in the weeks and months ahead.
“The financial services sector brings with it its own, unique challenges, and I feel that Jonathan and I will be in a position to add significant hands on value to the Executive Board as the business faces those challenges in a new regulatory environment.”
Jonathan Freeman gained an MBA from Warwick University in 1994 and began his career in corporate finance, working in Brussels and then London.
In 1997 he joined Beeson Gregory (now Evolution Securities) where he became a director and then joined Gambit Corporate Finance in 2002. Since 2004 he has been both an executive director and a non-executive director of a variety of quoted and private companies including Syndicate Asset Management, where he was group chief executive until December 2010.
He is currently the senior independent director and chairman of the audit and remuneration committees of Futura Medical plc and a non-executive director and chairman of the audit committee of PhotonStar LED Group.
Mark Holleran, chief operating officer at XCAP Securities, said: “These appointments bring further credibility and support to our executive management team as we seek to grow the business in challenging and consolidating market conditions.”
