First phase of Salford Central open to scrutiny

THE English Cities Fund is putting its plans for the first part of the £650m Salford Central regeneration out to public consultation.

Its proposals – for an area off Chapel Street adjacent to the Bell Tower pub – involve a block of six to three-storey apartments and retail units fronting onto Chapel Street. The pub will be kept and refurbished.

The area sits between Chapel Street, Islington Way, Barrow Street and Wroe Street.

The plans will be available to view on Thursday September 13, at St Philip’s Church, in nearby Wilton Place from 3.30pm-8pm.

Phil Mayall, development director at the English Cities Fund, said: “This event marks a milestone in bringing new development to Chapel Street and it is a big step towards the wider regeneration of Salford Central.

“We are really excited to share our initial proposals and find out what local residents think. We would very much like to hear people’s thoughts and I’d encourage anyone with an interest to come down and get involved.”

The English Cities Fund – a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General and The Homes & Communities Agency – says the regeneration of the wider 44-acre site could create 11,000 jobs.

A website, www.salfordcentral.com, provides news, images and facts about the scheme, which stretches from the Salford bank of the Irwell opposte facing Allied London’s Spinningfields scheme along Chapel Street towards the University of Salford’s Peel Park Campus.
