Tetrosyl sales hit by mild winter

THE mild winter of 2011 dented sales and profits at Tetrosyl Group, the car care and DIY products manufacturer, distributor and retailer, newly filed accounts show.

The Bury company, which is owned by chief executive Peter Schofield, and owns the Carlube and T-Cut brands amongst others, said the mild winter last year had impacted all its trading companies, Maccess, Pacific Retail, Tetrosyl and Tetrosyl France, and led to increased stock holdings of winter products.

Turnover fell from £163.7m to £157.7m and profits from £13.1m to £10.8m.

Tetrosyl employs more than 1,200 people, including around 400 at its factories in Oldham and Bury. Products are sold in more than 70 countries, although the UK is overwhelmingly its biggest market, representing more than 70% of sales.

Mr Schofield, whose late father Clifford founded the business in the 1960s, recently won a national Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst & Young.

In his review of trading, he said: “The group has continued to invest strongly in product research and development and manufacturing technology. This continued focus in high-tech manufacturing and R&D is an essential part of Tetrosyl’s business.

“The group has also continued to develop and enhance its existing brands through marketing and advertising and strong category and brand management.”

After buying the MotorMania chain in the West Midlands out of administration earlier this year, Tetrosyl has nearly 100 of its own shops. It also sells products in Tesco and Halfords and other major chains.
