Zilico moves to Manchester Science Park

CANCER diagnostic firm Zilico has moved from Sheffield to Manchester after securing funding from the North West Fund.

The firm has taken 650 sq ft at the MedTech Centre on Manchester Science Park where it has six staff.

Zilico, originally spun out from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is developing a new smear test system for cervical cancer which gives immediate results, removing several weeks of waiting for a diagnosis.

It has already secured £1.5m from The North West Fund for Biomedical, managed by SPARK Impact, and a further £300,000 from private investors.

Chief executive Sameer Kothari said: “This relocation represents another major step as we move closer to launching ZedScan in early 2013. The combination of quality onsite services, the region’s reputation for the development of medical technologies and local access to world-class medical facilities all provided an ideal fit for Zilico and what we are trying to achieve.”

The MedTech Centre is a joint venture between Central Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Science Park (MSP) and TRUSTECH, the NHS North West innovation service. It is home to 15 companies developing healthcare-focused technologies.
