Cobbetts advises Rangers and Pompey fans

MANCHESTER law firm Cobbetts is working with supporters’ trusts to help fans acquire stakes in Rangers and Portsmouth football clubs.

The firm has produced legal documentation to guide supporters on owning a stake in Rangers before it floats on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) later in the month.

The team, led by partner Kevin Jaquiss in Manchester, is also advising the Pompey Supporters Trust on an agreement to allow the organisation to increase a proposed shareholding in Portsmouth FC.

The club, which is currently in administration, has a court date set for December 13-14 which will decide its valuation.

As part of the contract, Cobbetts will offer legal advice to help strengthen the relationship between the trusts and football clubs.

Mr Jaquiss said: “Supporters are the lifeblood of the game – financially, culturally and socially. We are really pleased to be working with the trusts to give football fans the opportunity to use their own money to acquire together a meaningful stake and say in their club.”

In July 2011, the firm teamed up with FC United of Manchester to help other community enterprises raise cash without going into debt.
