Liverpool wins international cancer surgeons’ event

LIVERPOOL has been chosen to host the first world international congress of cancer surgeons.

In an estimaterd £2m boost to the local economy, the city will welcome more than 1,500 surgical oncologists for the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO_ conference in 2014.

It will be the first time in its 30 year history that ESSO has held its annual congress in the UK and also the first time it has invited delegates from sister associations from the US, Brazil, India and China.   

ESSO represents more than 20,000 cancer surgeons from across Europe and the Middle East.

The conference, which will take place from 29-31 October 2014, will include a special Lord Mayor’s reception for delegates, will be hosted at ACC Liverpool.

Professor Graeme Poston, consultant liver surgeon at Aintree University Hospital and Liverpool conference ambassador, helped secure the event alongside Liverpool Convention Bureau and ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena.
 
Professor Poston, who is also President of ESSO, said: “Liverpool’s growing track record for successfully delivering first class clinical conferences is increasingly giving us an advantage, alongside the city’s worldwide recognition in music and football, as our brand is a global one.”

Kate Currie, interim convention bureau manager at Liverpool Convention Bureau, said: “We faced competition from Athens, Geneva and Berlin, so quite rightly we are extremely proud to have secured such a high profile conference, which underlines our city’s international reach and expert knowledge.”

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, added: “The economic benefits of these conferences should never be underestimated. 1,500 surgical oncologists will be arriving in the city, spending money in our hotels, bars and restaurants which will boost the economy by an estimated £2m.”
