Wates Construction wins new Cornerhouse contract

WATES Construction has been appointed by Manchester City Council to build HOME, the merged Cornerhouse cinema and Library Theatre.
The £25m venue, due to open in 2014, will have a 500-seat theatre and five cinema screens, as well as gallery and exhibition space.
Around 200 people will be working on the project which is due to start this month.
Designed by Mecanoo Architects, it is part of a wider £80m Ask Developments scheme, just off Whitworth Street West, which will also include an 11-storey 208-bed Melia hotel, a 10-storey car park and 30,000 sq ft of restaurants, bars, and shops.
Tony Shenton, business unit director for Wates Construction North West said: “We are very proud of our appointment to such a flagship facility for the city, a project which is set to become Manchester’s new home of culture.
“Through partnership working we are in no doubt that this will be a world class artistic facility and we are very much looking forward to embarking on the next phase of the area’s transformation and adding to the renewed vibrancy at First Street.”
Wates has a base in Manchester and its headquarters in Surrey.
