Work to start on stalled Tameside scheme

WORK is due to start on a stalled housing scheme in Tameside after it secured £1.3m from a government fund.
Some 54 homes are planned for Droylsden, next to the Ashton canal, after builder Watkin Jones won backing from the £570m Get Britain Building fund through the Homes and Communities Agency.
It is part of the £100m plans for Droylsden Canalside Quarter which will also includes a new marina, offices and shops.
The first phase of 69 homes and the marina was completed in 2008 but development stopped due to the economic downturn. Watkin Jones’ residential scheme will consist of two, three and four-bedroom houses for sale, and should be finished early next year.
Cllr Kieran Quinn, Tameside Council leader, said: “This is good news for Droylsden and Tameside and is evidence of the public and private sector working together to find a solution in these challenging economic times when development is difficult.”
Deborah McLaughlin, HCA executive director for the North West, said: “It is great news that Watkin Jones and Tameside Council can get work back on track at Droylsden Canalside Quarter and that the Get Britain Building programme continues to deliver new housing and safeguard jobs. This will be a major boost for Tameside and its ambitions for much needed high quality new homes and economic growth.”
