Barclays backs work-related schools

BARCLAYS is to work closely with two “studio schools” in Cheshire, a new kind of educational establishment for 14 to 19-year-olds that seek to mix academic studies with work-based training.

Forty such schools have now been approved, including the Knutsford Academy, which will focus on digital technologies, and the Future Tech Studio in Warrington which will specialise in ICT. They will open next year.

Staff from Barclays’ Global Technology Centre at Radbroke Hall, Knutsford, will contribute to the curriculum and design project briefs at these schools. Work placements will also be available at the technology centre where 3,000 people support the bank’s global IT infrastructure.

Graham Bastin, managing director of IT at the technology centre, said: “As a major technology employer in the area we are delighted with the news that the studio schools in Warrington and Knutsford have been approved to open in September 2014.

“We feel the studio school concept will complement our existing entry level programmes, ensuring a pipeline of talent who can learn from our highly skilled technology experts. This will be a significant benefit to the development of not only our future workforce but also for the technology industry locally and nationally.”

Schools Minister Lord Nash said: “It is crucial for young people to have the skills and experience vital to employers, both for their own prosperity and to help us compete in the global race.”
