Whelan planning King Street apartments

DAVE Whelan is planning to convert the upper floors of a building he owns in Manchester’s King Street into apartments.

The multi-millionaire chairman of Wigan Athletic and founder of JJB Sports is planning 14 apartments in the block on the corner of King Street and Deansgate, across the road from the Waterstones building.

He told TheBusinessDesk.com he is also looking for premises for his DW Sports brand in the city centre.

“We’re planning 14 or 15 apartments on the top three floors. All the ground floor is occupied by retailers. Manchester is a great city and there will be strong demand. It’s in a great position and it’s a magnificent building.”

Mr Whelan conducts property deals through Wheldone Investments which he set up around five years ago with the intention of picking up bargains following the financial crash of 2008.

The latest edition of the Sunday Times Rich List put him in 485th place with a fortune of £160m.
