Megaw and Black launch law firm Freeman Fisher

THE former managing partner of law firm Davies Arnold Cooper, Alex Megaw, has teamed up with corporate lawyer Gary Black to launch a new Manchester law firm, Freeman Fisher.

The pair have recruited former barrister Kevin Murtagh as a consultant based in Manchester and also opened in Leeds, where Stephen Taylor Heath has joined as a third partner and is focused on the sports, media and entertainment sectors.

It is already looking to recruit commercial property, intellectual property and private client partners in the next 12 months, while also expanding its exisiting commercial litigation and corporate offerings.

Mr Megaw, 62, was the managing partner at DAC’s Manchester office until its merger with Beachcroft in 2011. He left the enlarged firm last December.

Mr Black, 42, returns to practice after a six-year spell as legal director of Altrincham-based investment group CorpAcq. He was previously with Berg Legal.

The new firm’s title stems from Mr Black’s mother’s maiden name (Fisher) which has been paired with Freeman.

Mr Megaw, who is managing partner, specialises in commercial litigation and insolvency matters, including directors’ disqualification proceedings, partnership and shareholder disputes, freezing injunctions and search and seizure orders.

Mr Black’s focus is on corporate and commercial work, including advising on acquisitions, disposals, buyouts, investments, joint ventures and company restructuring.

Mr Megaw said: “There is a real opportunity for smaller firms with expertise to engage more closely with clients and grow a business with emphasis on service delivery and fast contact at partner level.”

Mr Black added: “I’m delighted to be working with someone of Alex’s calibre and reputation. Also, having Stephen on board in Manchester and Leeds means we can look to service our existing clients and contacts as well as reaching a wider audience.

“I’m delighted to be back in practice and to have teamed up with individuals who share my enthusiasm and commitment to grow our business.”

Freeman Fisher has taken offices at 3 Hardman Street, Spinningfields.
