Luger to leave Manchester Business School

PROFESSOR Michael Luger is to step down as dean of Manchester Business School in September.

The 63-year-old American, who joined six years ago, said it was a “good time” to leave as the institution prepares for a major revamp.

A £60m redevelopment involves the construction of a 19-storey hotel which will be operated by InterContinental Hotels Group under its Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites brands.

The university said he will take up a new role “responsible for a broad portfolio of activities”, including the Centre for Infrastructure Development.

In a statement he said: “It has been a privilege to lead Manchester Business School for the past six-and-a-half years. During that time we have made considerable progress towards meeting our strategic goals, including strengthening of alumni relations.

“We have secured agreement for a major redevelopment project that will see the construction of exciting new facilities for our staff and students.

“As the construction work commences on this project, it seemed a good time to hand over the leadership reins and to pursue some new personal opportunities.”

Prof Luger is expected to remain in the North as his wife, Angela Spindler, is about to begin her new role of Manchester home shopping group N Brown.

Professor Fiona Devine, head of the university’s school of social sciences, will take over until a permanent replacement is found.
