THE North’s digital and creative businesses were recognised at this year’s Big Chip Awards in Manchester last week.
Hosted by comedian Andrew Ryan, the awards attracted 246 entries from 127 digital and creative organisations and freelancers from across the North.
The biggest winner on the night was Sheffield’s Tuna Technologies which won Best Use of Visual Design and Best Use of Gaming for Eufloria, a real-time strategy video game which won the Grand Prix Award.
Other big winners were Manchester digital agency Apadmi and Liverpool design firm Uniform, which both won two awards. Apadmi won Best Mobile Project and Best Application of Technology for its work on the BBC iPlayer Radio App.
Uniform picked up the Big Chip Imagination Award and the Anthony Wilson Original Modern award for its Postcard Player, a prototype that demonstrates how paper electronics can be used.
Manchester’s Code Computerlove won Best Not for Profit Project award for its Behind the Brands project which ranks the social and environmental policies of the world’s 10 biggest food and beverage companies. R.O.EYE, also in Manchester, walked away with the Big Chip Digital Agency of the Year prize.
Chair of Big Chip Steering Group, Shaun Fensom, said: “This year Big Chip has attracted the widest spread of entries yet, from all parts of the North. I am delighted to see such a strong range of entries, with big advances in areas such as gaming and application of technology. The longest-running digital awards in the UK are showing the world that the North has a strong, mature and growing sector.”
The awards are organised by trade association Manchester Digital, with support from partners including Digital Union in the North East, Leeds Digital Festival, Creative Sheffield and Creative Liverpool.
