LANCASHIRE pharmacy chain Medicx has bought five shops from Safehands Healthcare for an undisclosed sum.

The five pharmacies, trading as Hall & Stevens Pharmacy, are all based in the North West and bring the total number run by Medicx Pharmacy, which is headquartered in Skelmersdale, to 21.

Steve Jeffers, chief executive of Medicx Pharmacy, said: “The Hall & Stevens pharmacy practices are a perfect fit for us both geographically and, more importantly, in their focus on providing community based pharmacy healthcare services.

“We will build on the excellent foundations created by Safehands Healthcare and use our expertise to develop a wide range of services.”

Medicx Pharmacy plans to invest more than £300,000 to refurbish the new practices. Four of the five pharmacies are located in Warrington, where Safehands is based, and one is in Liverpool.

HSBC’s Liverpool commercial centre provided a finance package to support the acquisition, in a deal led by senior international commercial manager Dan Peacock.

Medicx Pharmacy is backed by funds managed by Cabot Square Capital which also controls the Surrey-based healthcare investor MedicX Group. Safehands was jointly owned by Tony and Jane Hall and Steven and Judy Abramson.
