Stockport Exchange car park tops out

MUSE Developments and Stockport Council have held a topping out ceremony at the new multi-storey car park which is the first part of the £140m Stockport Exchange scheme near the railway station.

The first phase, which includes the 1,000 space multi-storey car park and highway improvements, should be finished by the spring.

Phase two, funded by the council, comprises a 120-bed hotel, a 50,000 sq ft Grade A office building and the creation of a pedestrianised public space opposite the station entrance.

In April the insurer Canada Life agreed to forward fund the multi-storey car park. It is being built on land leased to the council by Network Rail and once complete will be run by car park operator NCP.

Muse’s joint managing director Matt Crompton said: “The topping out ceremony represents a significant milestone towards the transformation of this important regeneration scheme. With the recent announcement that the council will fund the second phase, this project is really gaining momentum.”

Councillor Iain Roberts, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said: “It’s great to see that years of planning and hard work are coming to fruition. The multi-storey is a key part of the overall development, providing much-needed car parking for this soon-to-be bustling commercial and commuter hub.”

The project team for this first phase includes: Contractor Morgan Sindall; RHWL Architects; project manager quantity surveyor and CDM Co-ordinator Gleeds; services engineer Hannan Associates; structural engineer Hill Cannon Consulting.
