Northwich landmark demolished after crash

THE Round Tower Lodge on the edge of Northwich was demolished on November 14 after a car crashed into it.

The grade II-listed landmark sits on the central reservation of the A556 at Sandiway.

Around a third of the tower was destroyed and the structure was removed by Cheshire West and Chester council which said it might be restored. The driver, a woman in her 50s, was said to have suffered minor injuries and was taken to Leighton Hospital. The Round Tower was built around 1816 as a gate lodge to Vale Royal Abbey.

Councillor Lynn Riley, executive member for localities said: “Our two officers were on the scene last night as soon as the alert was raised. Traffic diversions were put in place while a survey was carried out of the tower which was deemed unsafe.

“The tower blocks are now in safe storage and the council will carefully consider all options open to us, including the possibility of reconstruction.”

Local Weaver and Cuddington councillor Charles Fifield said: “I know that residents from across Northwich and beyond will be joining me today in thinking about the Round Tower – a well loved local landmark and I hope that it can be reconstructed.”
