Costain secures £100m Heysham link contract

CONTRACTOR Costain has been formally appointed to build a link road from Heysham and Morecambe to the M6.

The £100m project, awarded by Lancashire County Council, will involve a full reconfiguration of junction 34 of the M6, a three-mile dual carriageway, new slip-roads, and a 200-metre bridge over the River Lune.

Work will start in January and is expected to be finished by 2017.

Costain’s chief executive Andrew Wyllie said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this important contract, upgrading and refreshing the UK’s transport infrastructure to improve connectivity and asset efficiency. We have worked closely with the council and all local community stakeholders through the design development and planning process, and we now look forward to continuing the partnership to deliver an excellent outcome for Lancashire.”

Costain has been working with the council on the project since 2010 through an Early Contractor Involvement collaboration.
