Shock as Christie boss Caroline Shaw is suspended

THE boss of one of the region’s most successful and high profile hospital trusts has been suspended amid a disciplinary process.

Caroline Shaw, a former midwife, who has led the famous cancer institution The Christie NHS Foundation Trust as chief executive since September 2005, has a high profile in the Manchester business community.

Former MP Lord Keith Bradley, chairman of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, described the suspension of Mrs Shaw as a “neutral action” and was standard procedure.

In a statement on Thursday Lord Bradley said: “Caroline Shaw, chief executive of the trust, has been suspended today while investigations are underway as part of a disciplinary process.

“This is neutral action and follows the trust’s normal processes. We have put arrangements in place to ensure both the trust’s and charity’s activities continue to be delivered to the very highest standards and I would like to reassure patients, families and carers that this situation in no way affects or compromises patient care.”

This year Mrs Shaw, 46, who has spent all her working career in the NHS, was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year honours lists.

In October she took to the stage at the Comedy Store in the Funny Business fund-raising event alongside a number of other leading North West business leaders.

Despite being an active user of Twitter, her last entry on the social media site was on November 25.  Staff working at the hospital in Withington were said to be shocked and stunned at her suspension.
