Student halls approved for former jail

PLANNERS in Liverpool have approved plans to turn a former city centre jail into student accommodation, despite opposition from English Heritage.

Liverpool developer Jamworks wants to turn the Bridewell building into 15 student apartments with 86 bedrooms.

English Heritage was concerned that a proposal to make former cell windows bigger would change the character of the 1850s building which has grade II* status because it such a rare example of a city centre jail.

The building, which stands on Cheapside, has been redesigned by Liverpool architect Falconer Chester Hall (FCH).

Managing Director Adam Hall said: “This building has suffered greatly from being empty for 15 years and these proposals will enable it to have a new lease of life and see significant improvements to its hitherto neglected fabric.

“The design retains the cellular structure internally and while there will be some demolition externally, this will be of features added in later years including an extension at the ground floor.”

In their report planning officers said: “The student accommodation development will facilitate the reuse of this long term, vacant listed building. The proposal ensures its long term survival, preserving and enhancing the character and appearance of the Castle Street Conservation Area.”

Wirral-based Student Lettings Point originally bought the building from the city council for £450,000 in 2009. The firm won approval for a slightly larger scheme but sold it on to Jamworks. Work is due to start in February and should be finished by September.
