Omega borrows £7.5m for infrastructure works

WARRINGTON Borough Council has approved a £7.5m loan to Omega Warrington to fund a new road and infrastructure works on the Omega South site.

The cash will come from Warrington Borough Council’s capital programme and will be repaid over a seven-year period with interest.

Omega is a joint venture between Miller Developments and Royal Bank of Scotland-owned KUC Properties which is developing the 575-acre former Burtonwood airbase.

Around 80 acres sits north of the M62 and is already occupied by distribution bases for catering group Brakes and Hermes Parcelnet. A third unit for Travis perkins is under construction.

The larger section south of the motorway will also be dedicated to logistics but is likely to have other uses, including housing. Walmart is investing £100m in an Asda distribution centre which will be finished next year.

The council loan will pay for a road to connect Omega South to junction 8 of the M62, run parallel to the motorway to the Asda Logistics development and then connect down to Omega Boulevard which currently ends at the Royal Mail depot.

Council leader Terry O’Neill said: “This loan, which will be repaid with interest, will unlock the full potential of Omega South. The growth agenda for Warrington is essential to create jobs and wealth for the people of the town and ensure its future prosperity. The provision of this loan is an investment in the long term future of the borough.”
