Manchester woos Indian investment

INDIAN officials are being welcomed to Manchester next week as part of a drive to boost economic ties with the fast-growing nation.

The Deputy High Commissioner of India, Dr Virander Paul and the First Secretary (economic) Ms Rachita Bhandari will be in the city meeting civic, business and academic leaders on Monday and Tuesday.

The delegation will meet Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese, Salford Mayor Ian Stewart and also visit the universities of Manchester and Salford, The National Graphene Institute, MediaCityUK and the BBC.

The trip will also include a visit to the Emirates Old Trafford, home of Lancashire County Cricket Club for a tour of the stadium ahead of this year’s Investec Test Match between England and India.

Tim Newns, chief executive of inward investment agency MIDAS, said: “The development of the Indian market is incredibly important to Greater Manchester and the UK in general.  The 2013 Greater Manchester Internalisation Strategy (GMIS) named India as one of the city region’s six priority markets.”

“Greater Manchester already has strong links to India, due to historical trade links and the city’s large Indian population, there is still work to do and we are looking forward to meeting Dr Virander Paul to take those discussions forward.”

The visit is supported by MIDAS, Deloitte, the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) and UK Trade and Investment.
