Protesters must leave anti-fracking camp

ANTI-FRACKING campaigners must leave a camp near an IGas drilling site by 12pm today.

Judge Mark Pelling granted a possession order to landowner Peel Investments yesterday, but the campaigners say they will take their case to the Court of Appeal.

Around 60 people have been camped out on land at Barton Moss close to a site where listed group IGas has been carrying out exploratory drilling for coal bed methane.

It has become a focal point for facking protesters who say the process – which involves pumping large amount of water mixed with chemicals deep underground at high pressure to fracture rock and release gas – can cause air and water pollution.

Peel Investments claimed in court the camp was causing problems for the public and the police.

A report published in November by the Government body Public Health England said said emissions from individual wells are low and unlikely to have an impact on air quality but the cumulative impact of a number of wells “may be locally and regionally significant”.
