Canada Expo aims to woo workers

CANADIAN city Calgary, is wooing North West workers at an event this weekend.
Calgary, the most prosperous city in Canada and voted as one of the top cities in the world to live and work, is exhibiting at the WorkingAbroad.net Canada Expo on Saturday and Sunday at the Renaissance Hotel in Manchester.
Up to 10 Calgary-based companies will be showcasing the opportunities for jobs at he event.
Jeanette Sutherland of Calgary Economic Development said: “We’ve come to Manchester to meet tradespeople and professionals who are looking for opportunities to grow their career in a place that offers a great lifestyle.
“Calgary offers a strong economy, a lower cost of living, tax rates are lower than elsewhere in Canada and a fantastic outdoor lifestyle – This is why so many workers from the United Kingdom have made it their home.”
In 2012 more than 11,634 UK workers relocated to Calgary representing the largest group of overseas workers in the city.
There are numerous job opportunities in the oil and gas industry as well as in construction, healthcare, education and administration.
Adrian Bourne, originally from Irlam, has been living in Calgary 24 years and has built a successful career with an electrical contracting company after leaving the British Army.
He said: “I arrived with no career. Calgarian companies offer great opportunity to fast track your career, there is nothing to stop progression for those who want it.
“There is a massive lack of skilled workers here in Calgary, to the point where we have been unable to pitch for contracts due to lack of personnel with the right skills.”
