Roads to be closed for City victory parade

MANCHESTER City Council is warning commuters of extensive travel disruption around the city centre this evening as a result of Manchester City FC’s victory parade.

Several road closures will be in place from around lunchtime around Albert Square – the parade begins at Manchester Town Hall, before moving down Mount Street to Peter Street and the Deansgate to Exchange Square.

Road closures, will take place as follows: Albert Square, Mount Street, Princess: 11.00 – 21.30; John Dalton Street, Cross Street: 11:00 – 20.00; Peter Street: 14:00 – 20.00; Deansgate: Whitworth St West to Peter St: 15.00 – 20.00; Deansgate: Peter Street to St Mary’s Gate: 15:00 – 21.30 and Deansgate: St Mary’s Gate to Cateaton St: 17.30 – 21.30.

The council said: “People travelling in and out of the city centre during the late afternoon and evening are being advised to expect some disruption to roads and public transport services and to consider this when planning their journeys.”

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “This year’s title race has been enthralling and City and their fans have shown true resolve to finish top of the table.
 
“Putting local rivalries aside, the fact is that the Premier League title has now resided in Manchester for the last four seasons and that can only be good for the city. We expect tens of thousands to throng the streets to savour this latest success.”

The victory parade is expected to boost spending in city centre shops, bars and restaurants by more than £2m.
