Peel lodges plans for first part of Wirral Waters

PEEL Group has submitted a planning application for the first development at its Wirral Waters scheme.

Earlier this year Wirral Metropolitan College said it wanted to consolidate five centres at an £8m, 35,000 sq ft campus at the former Birkenhead Docks.

The idea is for its Built Environment, Skills and Enterprise Centre to provide the skills and knowledge needed to support the planned development of the £4.6bn scheme.

It is also relocating its Employer Services facility, which already supports around 1,000 employers.

The plans show a two-storey building on a two-acre site next to the Hydraulic Tower in Tower Road.

It is 90% funded through a £7.2m Government grant from a £194.3m funding round to colleges across the country. The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) provided a £2.5m loan to Peel to cover the cost of remediating the land.

The designs have been drawn up by Liverpool architect Glenn Howells. The planning agent is Manchester-based Turley.

Peel was hoping to start work on an International Trade Centre at the West Float part of the site last year, after signing a joint venture agreement with the Chinese group Sam Wa. But it will only go ahead when enough tenants are signed up.
