Start up scheme helps 900 firms to launch

FUNDING from a government scheme has helped 900 small businesses get off the ground in the region in the last 18 months.

Business Finance Solutions, which is delivered by Manchester-based Economic Solutions, says it has now awarded more than £5m to people setting up their own new businesses in the North West, under the government’s £150m Start Up Loans initiative.

Since January 2013 more than 900 entrepreneurs from across the region have received  low interest loans, business support and training to set up a wide range of businesses.

Paul Breen, director of Business Finance Solutions, said: “Start Up Loans continues to fill a real gap in the market for people you have a great business idea but are unable to secure the finance they need to get it off the ground via the usual channels.

“Reaching the £5m lending milestone is a huge achievement and a real testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the North West.”

Andrew Mattinson and Jon Chandler from Manchester received the 900th Loan to set up their business, The Pub Doctor, to supply high quality emergency staff to bars, pubs and clubs across the country.

Mr Mattinson said: “Between us Jon and I have over 35 years experience in our respective industries and we knew the time was right to pool our hospitality and sales expertise and launch our own business.

“We will be launching in Manchester but are also working on plans to expand our service across the UK and into different employment markets to ensure that we maximise the potential of our business.”

Start Up Now loans and advice are available to everyone over the age of 18 in the North West.
