Russells completes Manchester Holiday Inn

RUSSELLS Construction has completed the new Holiday Inn Express on Oxford Road in Manchester.

The Trafford-based building firm started work on the £9m contract in January 2009. Despite delays caused by the collapse of a crane in March 2009, the hotel has been completed ahead of schedule and is due to open at the end of the month.

The 12-storey, 147-bed hotel is owned by Holiday Inn Express franchisee Zinnia Hotels which runs a hotel in Winchester and two in Spain. A ground floor retail unit has been let to Spar, which was an existing tenant of the original building on the site.

Russell’s managing director Andrew Russell, said: “The hotel sector seems to have weathered the storm better than most. It is an area of our portfolio we have been keen to develop and Manchester is attracting a number of quality operators.

“We hope the Holiday Inn Express will be the first of many new hotel builds for Russells as we use the experience gained throughout this project to win future contracts in the sector.”

Jonathan Smith, general manager of the new Holiday Inn Express, said: “The transformation of this building site into an instantly recognisable landmark, on one of Manchester’s main thoroughfares, has been a great project for which everyone involved can be proud.”
