Lawyers, accountants and other professionals are required to take exams and achieve qualifications to be able to carry out their duties. There is no such requirement for directors yet their roles and responsibilities are onerous and far reaching.

The Institute of Directors has developed a suite of programmes to equip directors with all the tools they need to discharge their responsibilities to the highest level of professional competence.

Since 1991 the IoD Company Direction Program has been run by the University of Salford. The modules cover all aspects of a director’s duties and passing a multiple-choice examination results in the Certificate in Company Direction. A further module and exam based on board dilemmas can lead to the Diploma in Company Direction.

The ultimate qualification of charted director can be achieved by diploma holders who can convince two chartered director interviewers that they have suitable relevant and practical experience and capabilities as a director.

The programme has been designed specifically to support directors and aspiring directors to fulfil their strategic positions on boards, focusing on key issues such as governance, strategy and finance. Courses are:
• Role of the director and the board
• Finance for non-financial directors
• The director’s role in leading the organisation
• The director’s role in strategy and marketing
• Developing board performance

Participants don’t need to complete the entire programme. Each course can be taken individually and in isolation by both IoD members and non-members. Courses run throughout the year and a full schedule can be found on our website

This highly successful programme not only provides participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to make crucial decisions, but also gives directors and their organisations a significant competitive edge.

Andrew Evans, managing director of Preston Brook-based RMG Recruitment said the business saw significant growth after he took the course.

“I wish I’d woken up to the need for some self-development earlier as the benefits have been significant in many ways.

“Following completion of the programme I decided to completely change my role at RMG. I became focussed on providing leadership and put a significant amount of time into setting vision, mission and values, in conjunction with stretching targets. I grew the business by 46% in the following year.”

Alison Kennedy, IoD Programme Director at SPD said: “We are very proud to host the prestigious IoD Company Direction programme at Salford, giving North West directors the opportunity of a world-class experience without the cost in money and time of travelling outside the region. “
