Christie to alleviate parking pressure with pub site

THE Christie Hospital is looking to solve its ongoing parking problems by using the nearby site of a former pub as a car park.

It has submitted plans to turn the space that once housed The Golden Lion in Wilmslow Road, Withington, into a 150-space surface car park for five years.

Nearly 10 years ago a Didsbury-based developer Clarke-Lyons secured permission to demolish the pub and build 48 flats.

The pub was flattened in 2009 but the development never went ahead. Clarke-Lyons went into liquidation earlier this year.

The specialist cancer hospital has grown in recent years and it is now planning a specialist proton beam therapy centre on an existing surface car park.
