Mediamix: Just over half BBC staff now outside London; Tangerine; Code Computerlove

THE BBC said it now has majority of its staff based in the regions for first time.

It has spent the past decade working on a strategy to move staff from the capital.

The goal has been achieved a year early thanks to big moves to MediaCityUK in Salford and Pacific Quay in Glasgow.

Since 2007 staff numbers in London have fallen from 58% to 49%, but redundancies as part of a major cost cutting plan will have also played a part. It is also reducing the size of its property estate, with a plan to shrink from 300 buildings to 154.

The corporation has around 23,000 staff and 17%, or nearly 4,000, are now based in Salford, while Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland account for 18%, and a further 15% are spread across England.

Anne Bulford, managing director of finance and operations, said: “We have sold off costly London buildings like TV centre and moved more of our staff and programmes into the regions. It is all part of our plan to make the BBC ever more efficient and reflective of the country, with more than half our staff based outside London.”
