Whitaker secures approval for 500 Salford flats

PROLIFIC developer Daren Whitaker has secured consent for a major 500-apartment scheme on the River Irwell in Salford.

A vehicle called WB Developments (Salford) is behind the application for 491 apartments across four blocks, one of them 21-storeys tall, on a vacant three-acre plot adjacent to the Regent Road Campanile hotel.

It will feature four towers of 21, 10, eight and 12 storeys set around Wilburn Basin which was built in 1864 by the Salford Corporation and used as a mooring point for boats carrying goods to and from Manchester. Salford City Council is selling the land required for the deal.

In April another of Mr Whitaker’s companies, CS Developments (Manchester), submitted plans for a 282 apartments across two towers of 22 and 29 storeys on the banks of the River Medlock close to Whitworth Street West.

Mr Whitaker, who runs Renaker Build, already has permission for 497 apartments in 31 and 19-storey towers next to the River Irwell at Greengate through another company called Pinnacle Developments (NW).

Another of his companies, CS Developments (Manchester), has started work on a 282 apartments across two towers of 22 and 29 storeys on the banks of the River Medlock close to Whitworth Street West. A further vehicle called LQ Developments has secured approval for 301 apartments in a 28-storey block on the former Harry Ramsden’s plot in Regent Road.

Last year Whitaker’s Renaker Build bought the Royal Mills residential scheme in Ancoats from ING Real Estate. Renaker’s sister company Paragon Developments is already on site converting two former mills, Paragon and Royal Mills, after securing £4.7m from a government fund designed to kick start stalled schemes.
