‘Biggest ever’ building for Wigan

WIGAN Council says it has received plans for a factory that would be the largest building ever built in the borough.
US wet wipe manufacturer Nice-Pak International has submitted an application for a 400,000 sq ft base at the Westwood development site.
The company already has 150 staff at a factory in Hindley but needs to expand and has Regional Growth Fund backing. The move would create a further 100 jobs.
The Westwood site was once occupied by a power station but now has outline planning consent for 450 homes and detailed planning for a £21.5m highway scheme.
Councillor David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “This is hugely exciting news and yet another vote of confidence in the economy of Wigan Borough.
“That a business already based here is keen to expand within the borough in such an ambitious way shows Wigan is an attractive place to build and grow a business. Creating the conditions for economic growth and supporting the private sector is a key priority for the council.
“After a number of tough years for businesses in the borough I think there are encouraging signs that we are getting over the difficulties of recent times and can look forward to a very positive future.”
A Nice-Pak spokesperson said: “We are excited at the prospect of creating a world class manufacturing facility in Wigan. Subject to the granting of planning permission, we look forward to developing our presence in the area over the coming years.”
