Region wins £100m of work from Olympics

NORTH West companies have won contracts worth £100m as a result of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The North West Development Agency said 216 firms from the region have so 348 contracts related to the sporting spectacular which will be held in London in less than two year’s time.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA said: “These figures are really positive news for the region and show the major role that the Northwest is playing in helping to bring the Games to life.

“The business success we’ve had so far is extremely encouraging, and with less than two years to go until the start of the Games I’m confident this is only the start.”

Latest wins for the region includes Ticketmaster, the official ticketing services provider for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games whose Manchester contact centre is handling calls and emails from the public following the launch of the London 2012 ticketing sign-up in March 2010.

Chris Edmonds, managing director of Ticketmaster UK, said: “We opened our Manchester contact centre back in 2001 and since then it has gone from strength to strength, playing a fundamental role in our UK business.

“London 2012 will be the most significant sporting event in our lifetime and our team in Manchester is crucial in delivering the ticketing services to the public.”

Bolton-based Alan Hindle Transport, a specialist haulier to the construction industry, is another winner.

It has shipped portable buildings, underground pipes and large containers for plants to sites including the Olympic stadium and the basketball and handball arenas.

Working on London 2012 has enabled the firm to hire four new  full-time staff

Craig Keeble, general manager of Alan Hindle Transport, said: “The effect on our bottom line has been excellent for our business and has helped us move into a new 2.5-acre site in Bolton. The value of these contracts range from £25,000 to more than £250,000, increasing our turnover by 10% to 15%.”

Oldham-based Applied Language Solutions, has been appointed as London 2012’s main supplier of translation services. The contract will see the company translate documents and online content in the run up to the competition.
