Council seeks to get town in the fast lane

CHESHIRE East Council is set to begin consultation with Congleton residents and business over proposals for a major new road project.

The 3.5 mile Congleton Link Road is designed to reduce massive congestion and air pollution in the town and open up employment opportunities.

Council officials are presenting the latest plans to link the A 534 Sandbach Road – to the west of Congleton – with the A536 Macclesfield Road, to the north of the town, until March 31.

This follows a large scale consultation in early 2014 and the announcement of a ‘preferred route’ in May that year.

Considerable survey and design work to develop the scheme further has taken place since then.

Plans will go on view at Congleton Library on Thursday March 5 (from 2pm to 7pm), Friday March 6 (from 10am to 4pm), and Saturday March 7 (from 10am to 3pm).

Deputy leader of the council and cabinet member in charge of strategic communities, David Brown, said: “A new road bypassing the town has been talked of and debated for more than 30 years. Now we have the chance to make it a reality.

“However, before the project can progress further, we want residents’ and business’s views. This is so we can make our final preparations before we submit a planning application for the road later this year.”
