Final bricks laid in key phase of scheme

A PARTNERSHIP organisations involved in the major regeneration of a Carlisle housing estate have celebrated completion of a milestone in the project.

The scheme at the Raffles estate is a joint venture between housing regeneration specialst  Lovell, Riverside Board in Cumbria and Carlisle City Council.

The final few bricks have been placed to finish of 58 new affordable homes at Thomlinson Avenue and Dalton Avenue.

In total, the local community has seen more than 260 new homes built over the past decade, 107 for rent and has successfully turned a hard-to-let, troubled area of the city into a place of choice.

Chairman of Riverside, Mike Little, said: “The long-term vision seen in the regeneration plan drawn up over 12 years ago is now a reality.

“At that time people thought that building new homes for sale was a risk, so much of the area was a no-go – even for emergency services.

“The changes brought about here are remarkable; the mix of homes for rent and private sale with landscaped areas running through the estate shows real vision. These new homes built by Lovell offer much improved accommodation on the old council housing stock that stood here before.”
