Vauxhall drives ahead with apprenticeship pledge

CAR manufacturer Vauxhall Motors, based in Ellesmere Port, is creating up to 50 apprenticeship roles.

In conjunction with its training partner West Cheshire College and the union Unite, Vauxhall has said the new production operator roles will support its on-going training and succession planning to ensure the success of the New Generation Astra which is being launched in September.

Val Thomas, plant personnel manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in the region to get their first step onto the career ladder here at Vauxhall. Not only will they be able to work towards nationally recognised qualifications but also join us at one of the most exciting times in our history as we prepare for the launch of the new Astra later this summer.

“Apprenticeships have always formed an essential part of our training and skills development planning helping to ensure that our workforce has the right skills now and in the future.”

Maria Davison, director of business development at West Cheshire College, said: “We are delighted to be working with Vauxhall once again to help recruit and deliver the training for these 50 new Apprenticeship positions. Vauxhall has always been a huge supporter of Apprenticeships as they recognise the value of bringing in fresh new talent and training them into highly skilled, qualified and valued team members for the future.”

John Cooper, Vauxhall’s Unite leader, added: “Manufacturing is the powerhouse of the economy and the automotive industry is central to it. Vauxhall Motors plays an integral role in the economy, and with the recruitment of 56 more apprentices, continues to invest in the future of the plant, the local community, and gives employment opportunities to young people.”
