Council seeks CPO powers for Cornbrook

MANCHESTER City Council is asking for powers to be able to force the sale of land around the Cornbrook area south of the city centre.

In a report due to go before the executive next week, officials want to be granted powers to make compulsory purchase orders (CPO), if they can’t agree terms with three businesses still occupying the land.

The Council says the planned regeneration of the area by Peel Group subsidiary Manchestter Ship Canal Developments,  around the Metrolink Station has the potential to create 1,750 jobs.

The proposed mixed-used scheme include shops, offices, apartments and a hotel.

While many other businesses have already relocated, three remain, Clear Channel advertising, 3G Telecoms and auto repair firm Mancunian Springs.

In a report going before Manchester Council’s executive on Wednesday, official say they will request powers to CPO from the government by the end of October.
