Three Morrisons stores on the doomed list

Morrisons

THREE North West supermarkets are among thre 11 under-performing stores to be closed by Morrisons.

The Yorkshire-based retailer flagged-up the closures – which will cost around 900 jobs – last week, but had not revealed the locations until now.

The three shops in this region are at Little Hulton and Salford and Tyldesley near Wigan. A timescale for the closures has not been released.

The closures were announced as Morrisons profits slumped.  David Potts, the chief executive, said last week the decision was made “with great regret”, but added there was no way to make the affected stores viable.

Wigan Council said it would offer support to the secveral hundred staff affected by the planned closure in Tyldesley.

The local authority said its employment and skills team are already working with Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers Service to offer support and advice.

Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This is a very distressing and uncertain time for all members of staff at Morrisons in Tyldesley. We are acting quickly by teaming up with two key agencies, Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers Service, to make sure that staff have the support that they need.

“We believe it’s crucial that if people are made redundant they are able to quickly transfer into a new job or access the training they need to start a new career.”

Tyldesley councillor and Vice Chair of Wigan Planning Committee Stephen Hellier has also written to Morrisons urging them to re-think the decision.
