Regeneration plan for Beatle’s birthplace

WORKS start in January on a mixed-use scheme to regenerate the derelict site of the Liverpool hospital where Sir Paul McCartney was born.

Led by a 18,750 sq ft Aldi store designed by architect firm The Harris Partnership, the scheme includes just under 200 new homes off Rice Lane in the Walton area of the city.
The 12.65 acre site fell into disuse following the closure of Walton Hospital in 2010 and its future remained uncertain until planning was secured in August 2015 with JLL acting as planning consultants.
The Aldi store is being built in the shadow of the Grade II Clock Tower, a local landmark dating from the 1860s and all that remains of the hospital, and is expected to be completed in summer 2016.
The residential aspect of the scheme proposes a mix of 195 houses, apartments and bungalows to be developed by Lymm-based Mulbury in partnership with social housing provider Riverside Group.
