Restaurant review: CAU – an eatery for the discerning meat eater

VISITORS and residents in the fashionable Manchester suburb of Didsbury are being treated menu of bespoke steak with a taste of Buenos Aires, courtesy of restaurant group CAU.

The outlet, which opened in October, is one where diners are well advised to book in advance as tables fill up quickly even in the early evening, which was when I visited.

As its menu proudly boasts: “There’s beef and then there’s our beef” and how right it proved to be.

My partner and I, however, indulged and a little bit of deferred gratification on the steak front by opting for a portion of Hummus and Crisp Bread opener for £4.25.

We both agreed, as an appetiser this was delicious and set us up perfectly for the big event – the main course.
To smooth the way, we enjoyed a bottle of Andeluna ‘1300’ Malbec red wine (£29.50) in anticipation of our speciality dish – a Limito – 500g of fillet of rump, – considered the finest cut in Argentina, combining the flavour of rump and the tenderness of fillet (£33.50).

It was billed to come with blue cheese sauce, but we were offered an alternative of chipotle butter, garlic and herb aioli sauce, or what we selected, pepper sauce.

There are plenty of side dishes available, but we both opted for a helping of triple cooked chunky chips which were delicious, alongside the steak.

Service was attentive, informative and in general perfect from waiter staff with an intelligent and pleasant demeanour, at pains to point out that in fact you can have any cut of steak you want ie. “larger cuts are available on request”.

The inside décor of the restaurant is chic and unfussy in the best modern way. All round CAU offers a highly enjoyable eating experience across a range of prices.

Once again, I defer to the menu. It says: “An eclectic selection of dishes from a city where cultures and cuisines collide, embrace the chaos and pick whatever and whenever.” I couldn’t agree more.
