£26m plan to convert derelict police station into 130 homes

A £26m plan to convert the derelict former Salford Police Station into a complex of 130 homes has been unveiled.

The scheme is the brainchild of 26-year-old former Salford University student Maros Kravec, a native of Slovakia, who admired the building on Salford Crescent when studying at the institution opposite.

Kravec’s company STAMA Development has entered into a joint venture with Property Alliance Group, thanks to a meeting at a Lloyds Bank event at which he was introduced to PAG director David Russell.

When Kravec explained his idea for the police station – built in 1957, Russell took an immediate interest, said STAMA marketing manager Zuzana Stepankova.

“The company was launched in 2012 and STAMA has carried out various projects, including 47 apartments in Bury, 12 houses in Rochdale and 51 units in Ashton under Lyne, but if planning permission granted this will be our biggest project yet,” she said.

The plan includes 96 apartments and 34 town houses on land behind the building.

STAMA’s internal design team is being mentored by Manchester architectural practice MPSL.

The planning application will be submitted at the end of this month.
