Escape the city – 8 beaches a short journey away

THERE are always so many things for us to get up to in the cities and surrounding areas of Manchester, Liverpool and Chester every week, but sometimes all we want is a bit of fresh air and to feel the sand in between our toes.

We’re lucky here in the North West because there are loads of fantastic beaches to chill out on every weekend. Head to one of our favourites and don’t forget the picnic, bucket and spade and raincoat… just in case.

Formby
Located 14 miles north of Liverpool sits the beautiful Formby beach. High dunes on the beach offers the perfect spot to relax with your family and friends as you enjoy the views of the Irish Sea and even the mountains of Cumbria on a clear day. Formby beach, which is maintained by the National Trust, is surrounded by stunning pinewoods, meaning the whole family and the dog can explore the area. Find out more about the beach here.

West Kirby Beach

 

West Kirby
This beach, located on the Wirral, is only 300 metres long but offers a fantastic day out. The area boasts a popular marine lake as well as a whole range of coffee shops, bars and of course, ice cream parlours! If you’re a sporty type, you will love this beach as watersports are big news in West Kirby, with windsurfing and kite surfing on offer for you to get involved in. Find out more here.

Morecambe WayMorecambe North
If you’re after a traditional English seaside, head to this wonderful beach! The beach offers views of the whole of Morecame Bay and beyond. There is also a promenade full of entertainments and amusements like an arcade and a cinema and bowling alley for when the weather takes a turn for the worse. You can also windsurf or relax in a boat out at sea or alternatively, kick back with a good portion of fish and chips. Find out more here.

BlackpoolBlackpool
We couldn’t make a list of beaches in the North West and not include Blackpool! Blackpool boasts everything you need for a great day out with your family and friends. Chill out on the beach with an ice cream or head to the amusement park which has 125 rides and attractions for you to spend your day on. There is also plenty for the kids too, with Nickelodeon Land and smaller rides. There is a range of entertainment on each night and of course plenty of hotels if you want to make a weekend out of it! Colwyn BayColwyn Bay
Colwyn Bay in North Wales is so much more than just a beach! The town, which sits on the coast overlooking the Irish Sea, boasts everything from water skiing and golf clubs to fun activity centres and canoeing. There are also a range of shops, coffee shops and restaurants to explore and enjoy as well as, of course, a beautiful beach where you can sit in and take in the picturesque scenery. Porth TrywynPorth Trywyn
This beach is a real hidden gem and if you like to feel remote and away from your city life, you will love this place. Not only does this place offer the perfect spot to get away from modern life and to simply relax for the day, you will also love it if you’re a fan of sea fishing. Alternatively, if you fancy yourself as quite the rambler, you will enjoy walking down the Anglesey Coastal Path which offers fantastic views.
