Sir Howard calls on Government to voice its support for HS2

MANCHESTER City Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein has given a strong message of post-Brexit confidence but is calling for the Government to voice its continued support for HS2.

“The advent of a new Government will be important as will what, if any, changes are to be made to fiscal and economic management policies.

“Right now Government can help by demonstrating continuing support for big projects like HS2 and Transport for the North,” he told a global property conference last week.

He added: “The overriding requirement now is to communicate the message that Manchester remains open for business. We have a range of opportunities that remain highly attractive to the investment community and part of our job is to ensure these are fully grasped.”

Sir Howard went on to say that Brexit meant the case for greater devolution will become even stronger.

“Reforming our public services is crucial to promoting greater levels of economic inclusion so that all residents can share in the benefits of economic success.

“We are also witnessing how devolution in health and social care is attracting significant interest from international companies who see the potential for changes in health care and securing better population health outcomes.”

Sir Howard was speaking to 100 delegates at Knight Frank’s global agency conference.

Head of Knight Frank’s Manchester office David Porter said: “It is clear from the reaction of my colleagues from around the world that Manchester has a place on the global stage and needs to continue the successful strategy of public/private partnership which has led to strong economic growth in the city region.”
