100 companies sign up for Port of Liverpool

UP to 100 companies has signed up in a bid to drive more cargo through Port of Liverpool, owned by Peel Ports.

Last year, Peel launched Cargo200 to try to get more importers and exporters to switch the entry and exit point for heir goods from ports in the South East to Liverpool.

If successful Cargo200 will slash freight mileage by 200 million miles over the next five years and now that Peel has completed its £300m Liverpool2 terminal the Merseyside port can handle 95% of the world’s largest container vessels.

New signatories to Cargo200 include Ultimate Products, a distributor of consumer goods from 27 countries to more than 450 retailers and The Real Good Food Company which have joined Diageo, JCB, B&M, Jaguar Land Rover, Matalan, Bentley and Typhoo, who were already on board.

Peel Ports’ group commercial director, Patrick Walters, told the Liverpool Echo: “We’re now past the halfway mark and our campaign to create a sustainable shift in the UK logistics sector continues to gain momentum.

“What this proves is that there is clear, substantial demand from cargo owners to save costs, congestion and carbon emissions by shipping closer to their markets.

“The new and expanded services we have already announced this year demonstrate that shipping lines have confidence in the benefits offered by Liverpool as the UK’s most centrally located national port.”
