Homelessness charity appeals for new social space

EMMAUS Salford, a charity that supports formerly homeless people, is appealing for help from the local business community in its search for bigger social enterprise premises.

The charity supports formerly homeless people by offering a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise, and an opportunity to get back on their feet again.

There are currently 28 Emmaus communities across the country, supporting more than 750 formerly homeless people in the UK.

Emmaus Salford is supporting 18 formerly homeless people but wants to be able to support more. To do this, it needs more social enterprise space to generate income and provide meaningful work to the people it supports.

Simon Locke, community leader at Emmaus Salford, said: “We urgently require new social enterprise premises to complement our two existing shops in Salford. Ideally we are looking for premises between 5,000 sq ft and 15,000 sq ft, large enough to house a retail area, storage space, workshop and recycling operations.

“Emmaus Salford will be good custodians and we are happy to take on leases of between two and 10 years. I appeal to any property owners, developers or landlords to consider our appeal get in touch and visit us to find out more about the work of Emmaus Salford.”

The charity is looking to rent suitable property in Salford, Trafford, Manchester, Sale, Swinton and Altrincham. The premises will act as a hub for other shops, giving Emmaus the ability to grow sustainably and support even more homeless people.

Emmaus Salford runs two social enterprises on Seaford Road and Fitzwarren Street, selling donated and upcycled furniture, household goods and vintage wares. Money generated helps to support formerly homeless people who live and work at the charity.
